In college I took a class called “Pregnancy and Childbirth in America” that involved getting an oral history of your birth from your mother, if you were so lucky to have her around. I’m extremely lucky that I was and am, further because my mother was thinking about me and planning for me from long before she even got pregnant, so her history was heartwarming and quite thorough.

One thing I was totally unprepared for was her discussion of people touching her pregnant belly. We Meils don’t much love being touched and DO much love a good story, so I always wondered if she was exaggerating a bit…but Jessica’s piece on celeb gestation introduces the topic too convincingly for me to overlook!

She makes the point better than I could, but as if being in a pregnant body you can’t control very well (which I know assumes the privilege of being able to control your body to a degree) isn’t uncomfortable enough, now you’re a public object :P

Family (vacation) planning - v.1

My nuclear family is planning a vacation to Hawaii in August.

Since I travel quite a bit for work on fairly short notice (at a very fast-moving company that I love) planning a trip 4 months from now is semi-absurd for my lifestyle. (I had a completely different job + boss 4 months ago and another set 4 months before that.)

However, my little brother is in law school and my mother and father work in more traditional offices, so tightening up an agenda, flights & hotels asap has become a family requirement.

Besides choosing Kauai as our home base, we have a lot of holes to fill & need to pull it together fast.

Kayak & TripAdvisor have been quite helpful so far in parsing price, location & popularity, but I’m also trying to pull together something more visual for my mom to review on her ipad.

So, later this week it’s on to pinterest, findery, and caterina’s original joint, flickr, to look for stuff that looks brain-breakingly beautiful.

Hopeful that some image searches will makes it easier to choose between Maui and Oahu for our last few days.

In my new life, four months from now, how do I even know what I will like/want? I’m at least somewhat confident I’ll want some awesome mental snapshots that look like stock beach photos, so here goes at narrowing the field :)

Sometimes evolution has terrifying fever dreams where everything is beautiful but nothing makes any sense. Shapes and colors appear and disappear and rearrange themselves like mad ghosts, and nothing ends up quite where it’s supposed to be. What do these dreams mean? Evolution doesn’t know. But when it wakes up in the morning, it makes some really weird-ass birds.

-Be broad but honest. Like tagging a blog post you want to be found in search results.

-Don’t include a skill just because someone else says you have it.

-Stay ahead of trends on your page; once you publish, new people will follow the leaders.

Recommendations:

-Take a page from the grad school applications process and only publish recommendations from people you ask or really, really want to be associated with professionally (mostly the kind of people you have to ask).

-Shape the content of their recommendation in advance with some heavy hints or a pointed request.

-Brevity/Clarity is power. Badass, clear thinkers don’t need a lot of words.
